The Skyline Trail in Jasper National Park is a spectacular backpacking destination in the Canadian Rockies. Of the 44 km of trail, nearly two thirds of the route is above treeline. You can expect sweeping mountain views in all directions, beautiful glacial lakes, and wind-swept ridges for miles. The trail climbs over three mountain passes along a moderately graded path. You’ll encounter diverse flora and fauna (and a beautiful wildflower display in August), as well as vast meadows great for wildlife encounters.
In general, July through September is the best time to hike the Skyline Trail. Snowpack is a key factor for trip planning in this area, as snow can linger on the passes, especially the Notch, until late in the year. Rain and snow can fall at any time of year and freezing temperatures are possible, even in summer months. As always, be prepared and diligent monitoring current conditions before your trek. Weather can change quickly . Before heading out, check the Jasper National Park trail report for up-to-date conditions at www.pc.gc.ca/jaspertrails.
Water is plentiful along this trail and easily accessible from small streams. Carry enough water to get from one source to the next and use a lightweight water purifier. Every campsite along this trail has nearby running water.
NOTE: You do not require a backcountry permit to hike the skyline if you are staying at the lodge. Backcountry permits are required for campsites along the skyline trail

The skyline trail is a very popular backcountry trail in Jasper, parking at both trail heads is limited. We recommend for our guests and hikers of the skyline to utilize a shuttle service to access the Skyline Trail.
The following information is from 'Maligne Adventures':
This shuttle primarily caters to those embarking on a multi-day backcountry hike along the Skyline Trail by providing one-way transportation between trailheads.
If you are hiking the trail South to North (recommended), you will start your hike at Maligne Lake. We suggest parking your vehicle at the North Skyline/Signal Mountain Trailhead, which would be the endpoint of your hike. Our shuttle can then collect you at 9:15 am and transport you to Maligne Lake, where you can begin your hike. Your car will be waiting when you finish.
For those hiking the trail in reverse, we suggest parking your vehicle at Maligne Lake (South Trailhead), which will be the ending point of your hike. Our shuttle would collect you at 10 am and transport you to North Skyline/Signal Mountain Trailhead, where you can begin your hike. Your car will be waiting when you finish.
For those without a vehicle, pick-up is available from the Two Brothers Totem Pole, 416 Connaught Drive, Jasper. If you are planning on hiking elsewhere in the valley, pick-up or drop-off is also available at Watchtower or Jacques Lake Trailheads.
